Care for Skin Darkening During Pregnancy

(also known as "Melasma" or "Mask of Pregnancy")

Melasma is a dark discoloration of the skin on your cheeks, forehead, nose, or upper lip that occurs during pregnancy. (It can also appear in women who are taking birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy.)

Avoiding the sun and using sunscreen are the keys to preventing melasma. Most often, melasma fades away once your pregnancy is over.

We offer our patients several treatments for melasma, including Vitamin C and medical creams from Obagi and SilkPeel. Occasionally, a chemical peel can improve the appearance of darkened skin.

SilkPeel's Lumixyl cream and microdermabrasion with Lumixyl infusion also lighten the discoloration from melasma. Lumixyl stops skin cells from making the dark pigment so that skin can return to its natural color. These treatments are safe for all skin types.
